How to Choose a Genuine Leather Jacket

A good leather jacket is bought once and worn for years, so it is worth slowing down before you choose. Five things decide whether a jacket is right for you: the hide, the style, the fit, the details, and how honestly it is described.

Start With the Hide

The leather sets the weight, the warmth and how the jacket ages. Cowhide is heavy, tough and structured — the traditional choice for biker jackets. Sheepskin and lambskin are lighter and softer, with more drape and a smoother hand. Suede is the napped side of the hide: soft and matte, but less forgiving of rain.

If you want a jacket that feels broken-in from day one, go softer. If you want one that moulds to you over years of wear, go heavier. Our guide to cowhide, sheepskin and lambskin goes through the trade-offs in detail.

Choose a Style You Will Actually Wear

Style is less about fashion than about what you wear underneath and where you are going.
  • Biker: asymmetric zip, wide lapels, belted or zipped waist. The most recognisable silhouette and the most attitude.
  • Cafe racer: clean front, short stand collar, minimal hardware. Easier to dress up.
  • Bomber and aviator: ribbed or shearling-trimmed hem and cuffs, roomier body. Warm and relaxed.
  • Long coats and trench coats: the most formal option, and the one that works over tailoring.
Unsure between the first two? Read biker vs cafe racer jackets.

Get the Fit Right Through the Shoulders

Almost everything on a leather jacket can be adjusted except the shoulders. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone — not hanging past it, not riding up onto it. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone with your arms relaxed, and you should be able to cross your arms without the back pulling tight.

Measure yourself before ordering using our leather jacket size guide, and see how a leather jacket should fit for the full checklist.

Look at the Details

  • Zips: they take the most strain. They should run smoothly with no catching at the seams.
  • Stitching: even, tight and straight, with no loose ends at stress points such as pocket corners and underarms.
  • Lining: a lining makes the jacket easier to put on and protects the hide from body oils. Quilted linings add warmth; thin satin linings keep a jacket light.
  • Pockets: check that there are enough of them, and that the inside pocket fits your phone.

Real Leather vs Faux Leather

Genuine leather has a slightly irregular grain, breathes, and develops a patina with wear. Faux leather (PU) is uniform, lighter on the wallet and animal-free, but it does not breathe as well and does not age in the same way. Both have their place — what matters is that the product description tells you clearly which one you are buying. Every Chaqueta World product page names the material it is made in.

When Off-the-Rack Will Not Fit

If you are between sizes, have long arms or a broad chest, or want a specific colour or lining, a made-to-measure jacket avoids the compromise. You can design a custom leather jacket with your own measurements.
