How Should a Leather Jacket Fit?

A leather jacket should fit closer than a coat and looser than a shirt. Leather softens and relaxes with wear, but it does not grow — so a jacket that is uncomfortably tight on day one will usually stay tight.

The Five-Point Check

  • Shoulders: the seam sits at the edge of your shoulder bone. This is the one measurement that cannot be altered afterwards.
  • Chest: zipped up over a T-shirt or thin knit, you can slide a flat hand inside without the front straining. The zip should not ripple.
  • Sleeves: with arms relaxed, the cuff reaches your wrist bone. Reach forward — the cuff should not ride more than a couple of centimetres up your forearm.
  • Back: cross your arms in front of you. You should feel the jacket, but it should not pull hard across the shoulder blades.
  • Length: most biker and cafe racer jackets finish at or just below the belt line. Bombers finish at the waist; coats are measured from the collar down.

How Much Will It Stretch?

Softer hides such as sheepskin and lambskin relax a little at the elbows and across the back within the first weeks of wear. Heavier cowhide moves less and takes longer to break in. Neither will gain a full size, so do not buy small expecting it to stretch into place.

What You Wear Underneath

Decide what you will layer before you choose the size. A jacket that is perfect over a T-shirt may be too tight over a hoodie or heavy sweater. If you plan to layer through winter, most people take the next size up — or choose a roomier style such as a bomber.

Between Two Sizes

Choose the size that fits your shoulders, then judge the rest. If the shoulders fit in both, take the smaller size for a sharper biker or cafe racer look and the larger one if you want room to layer. If neither is right, a made-to-measure leather jacket is cut to your own chest, shoulder, sleeve and length measurements.

Men's and Women's Cuts

Our women's jackets are cut closer through the waist with a shorter body, and use a separate size run (XXS–2XL). Men's run XS–3XL. The size guide has both charts and explains how to take each measurement at home.
